The Message That Came Back
In 1977 a six-year-old girl said eleven words into a microphone, and they went to the edge of the solar system. Fifty years later the spacecraft came back, rebuilt by something nobody can identify, carrying ninety seconds of reply addressed to her. I was. I am not now. Were you? A committee is drafting humanity's answer. There is no person anywhere in it.
